Your Questions Answered

How do I know if I should start therapy?

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or not like yourself, therapy can help. You don’t need to be in crisis—many people come simply wanting more clarity, support, or change. Addressing concerns early can make them easier to understand and manage.

How is counseling different from psychotherapy?

Counselling and psychotherapy are closely related and often overlap. Counselling typically focuses on specific concerns, practical strategies, and shorter-term support. Psychotherapy tends to explore deeper, longstanding patterns in thoughts, emotions, and relationships, often over a longer period. Both approaches aim to support meaningful change and improved well-being.

What if I’m not sure what to talk about?

That’s completely normal. Your therapist will help guide the conversation and support you in exploring what feels most important at your own pace.

What are your fees?

Session fees vary depending on the type of service provided. Individual sessions typically range from $135 to $180. We’re happy to provide more specific information based on your needs when you reach out.

What is a therapy session like?

Each therapist brings their own style, but therapy is always a collaborative and supportive process. In the first few sessions, we focus on getting to know you—your experiences, concerns, and what brings you to therapy—while building a sense of comfort and trust.

From there, we work together to clarify your goals and create a flexible plan that reflects what matters most to you. This process can evolve over time as your needs change.

Throughout therapy, your therapist will support you in exploring new perspectives, developing helpful strategies, and moving toward meaningful change—always at a pace that feels right for you.

How do you protect patient privacy with online services?

The online platform that we use conforms to Canada’s federal privacy legislation, the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA).

PIPEDA shares many similarities with the United States’ Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). Unlike HIPAA, however, PIPEDA governs all forms of personal information, including but not limited to health data. The servers for our platform and data centers are located in Montreal.

How long will therapy take?

The length of therapy varies depending on your goals and circumstances as well as the severity of the symptoms. Some people benefit from short-term support, while others choose longer-term work. Therapy can also be flexible, with sessions spaced out as progress is made.

How long is each therapy session?

Standard sessions are typically 50 minutes in length, with a clinical hour consisting of 50 minutes of consultation and 10 minutes of progress notes. Longer or extended sessions may be available depending on your needs and the type of service provided.

Do you offer in-person therapy sessions?

We primarily offer online therapy sessions to provide flexible and accessible care. Depending on your needs and the frequency of sessions, there may also be options to supplement online work with occasional in-person sessions.

Do you offer receipts?

Yes, receipts are provided after each session. These can be submitted to your insurance provider for reimbursement, depending on your coverage. If you do not have private insurance, psychological services are generally considered eligible medical expenses and may be claimed on your income tax return.

Do you offer sliding scale fees?

We do not offer sliding scale fees or senior and student discounts at this time. For reduced-fee services, you may contact Maison Multiethnique Myosotis at 514-271-4407 or the Applied Psychology Clinic at Concordia at 514-848-2424 ext. 7550.

What is your cancellation policy?

Please provide at least 24 hours’ notice for cancellations or rescheduling; otherwise, the full session fee will apply.

Is online therapy as effective as in-person therapy?

Yes — research consistently shows that online therapy is as effective as in-person sessions for most mental health concerns.

Does insurance cover services?

Many extended health benefit plans in Canada cover services from registered psychologists and other regulated health professionals. We recommend checking with your insurer. We can provide receipts for reimbursement.
